This isn’t the soft version of love.
He wrote, “Pure love is a warrior’s practice. It asks you to stay calm under pressure, to stand firm when it’s hard, and to choose the right thing even when no one is watching. Love may spark the soul. But resilience and the discipline to keep showing up is what keeps it alive.”
That framing is powerful.
It got me thinking about a line from Marcus Aurelius.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself.”- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.33
📖 STOIC PLAYBOOK
That line isn’t soft.
It’s demanding.
Being strict with yourself requires discipline. It requires self-control. It requires choosing the harder path when the easier one would satisfy your pride.
Being tolerant with others requires patience. It requires humility. It requires the strength to not react from ego when you feel slighted or misunderstood.
That combination is not weakness.
It’s trained character.
If love is only a feeling, it fades when pressure rises. If love is a discipline, it survives pressure.
Choosing patience when you could dominate.
Choosing restraint when you could lash out.
Choosing to keep showing up when it would be easier to withdraw.
That’s not softness.
That’s strength directed properly.
Stephen called it a warrior’s practice. I think that’s accurate.
Not because love is aggressive. But because it requires mastery over yourself first.
